This year we will focus on the world of math and experience how math will help you in the future!
- Apply & extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.
- Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world problems.
- Solve real-life & mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions
- and equations.
- Draw and describe geometrical figures and solve real-life and mathematical problems

ENGLISH
Throughout this course students will:
• Read and respond to a variety of informational and fictional texts as they enhance develop skills outlined in the DESK standards: identifying key ideas and details, analyzing the author’s craft and structure, and integrating knowledge and ideas among a variety of texts.
• Create polished drafts of informative, argumentative, and narrative writing and evaluate the writing of their peers.
• Develop conventional language skills in sentence structure, vocabulary acquisition, and word parts.

In this one-semester required course, students will acquire additional skills that supplement their English course. Unlike English class, the lab class focuses primarily on reading literature and little focus on writing and grammar. As students read a variety of literature, they will practice the standards of identifying key ideas and details, analyzing craft and structure, and integrating knowledge and ideas as they make connections among a variety of fictional and informational texts.
SCIENCE

Seventh grade science is an exciting, lab-filled, hands-on, one-year course that covers the Utah state requirements: physical science, earth science, and life sciences.

Study of force and motion, magnetism, electric forces, gravitational forces, the earth’s interior and surface features, the rock cycle, density, geologic and natural hazards, fossils, structures and functions of cells, human body systems, heredity and reproduction, mutations, connections between ancient and present-day organisms, and comparative embryology.

4335 – Creative Writing (semester)
- Students will discover, develop, and demonstrate skills related to writing fiction.
- Students will complete genre studies, including mystery, historical fiction, science fiction, etc., reading and evaluating mentor texts in each genre.
- Students will follow the writing process to brainstorm, prewrite, draft, revise, edit, and share multiple short stories with their peers and teacher.

Open to all students. MUST HAVE 2 YEARS PIANO or ANOTHER BAND/ORCHESTRA INSTRUMENT or AUDITION WITH TEACHER. Experience the excitement of learning how to play a new musical instrument!
- Students will focus on learning basic techniques to play mallet percussion and snare drum but will learn and be able to play MANY percussion instruments including Concert Bells, Xylophone, Marimba, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Timpani, Ethnic Hand Drums and other auxiliary percussion instruments.
- Students should already have a basic understanding of note and rhythm reading. They will improve their sightreading and listening skills while combining to rehearse and perform with the Percussion Ensemble.
- You will get to perform in several concerts throughout the school year playing several different percussion instruments.
- Practicing at home is an important part of learning to play an instrument and will lead to a more successful experience. Students will need to have a Percussion Kit with their own bells, practice pad, mallets and drum sticks for practice and class rehearsal.
- There is a Class Fee to cover the maintenance of other percussion instruments students will use throughout the year.
- Playing in the Percussion Class Playing in the band is a great way to learn teamwork, dedication, and creative thinking, while having LOTS of FUN and making GREAT FRIENDS!

An enrichment course that prepares students to develop and improve their critical thinking skills, personal creativity, collaboration skills, and individual character. In this elective course students will participate in inquiry-based science and engineering processes while using hands-on activities and research-based experiences. These projects will aid in the development of relevant skills which will benefit students in the classroom and beyond. This course is recommended for all students who enjoy STEM based projects, and hands on learning.
SCIENCE

Students will be exploring different science topics in this class. There will be a hands-on / project- base format for each of the topics. Topics may include:
- Ecology
- Plant and Animal characteristics and structures
- Microbiology
- Aeronautics: rocket building, trajectory
- Biology, Geology and Astronomy, to name a few.
Students will be encouraged to participate in both district and state science Olympiad competitions. Students will be introduced to a topic and will choose an area in which they are most interested. Once a student chooses an area of interest, they will be given a project to complete or build. Projects will then be tested. Students will track their progress with project cards.
OTHER

- This program is students helping other students
- If you would like to work one-on-one with our special-needs students, help them stay on task, work on projects and set an example to help others, this is the place for you.
- Limited number of students will be chosen for this, an alternative may be used if you select this course.
- Develop stronger organizational skills to manage junior high more effectively
- Build a stronger foundation in reading comprehension and writing skills
- Utilize technology including basic word processing skills, grade monitoring, email, and cloud storage This class will teach you how to organize and manage junior high more effectively.
- This would be a good class for transition into the junior high setting!

Math lab is PART of Math. Math Lab helps us teach math everyday. Student will receive a grade in A day Math only and a Pass in B day math.
ENGLISH
Make our language work for you. Improving your English skills will help you do better in every other subject. This year we will focus on:
- Writing development, as well as expand comprehension of literary, functional, and informational texts
- We will work daily to develop reading strategies and work with cross-curriculum studies to allow students to see the powerful relationship between historical events and expressions found in literature

SOCIAL STUDIES
•The United States history course for eighth grade is designed to emphasize historic events from the age of exploration to reconstruction and the western movement. Topics covered will include, but are not limited to:
The Age of Exploration, colonization, the Revolutionary War, national period, constitutional issues, Civil War, reconstruction, and the Western Movement.
The emphasis of this course is on the 18th and 19th centuries. There will be continued effort to review and develop content, and process thinking skills introduced in previous grades.

- This course will introduce students to the components of digital literacy needed for a 21st century leaner. Introduce and familiarize students with essential computer concepts and terminology including operating systems, software, hardware, application and peripherals
- Introduce and familiarize students to online skills for research using Web browsing and Internet research
- Teach the basic productive programs to increase competencies in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation. (Word, Power Point, Excel, Access and Outlook). Daily keyboard assignments are provided for students to master touch typing

- Now you get to participate in full band concerts, elementary band tour and travelling to festivals as well as improve personal skill development with solo and ensemble experiences. Don’t forget, practicing at home is an important part of your Band experience and the key to developing an incredible talent.

- 8th grade boys choir is a year long class open to all 8th grade boys who are excited to work through their voice change!
- Where else can you be among fellow guys who are going through the same vocal issues you are facing? A safe environment is created to allow you the freedom to develop this changing voice of yours.
- This will be a continuation of the healthy vocal habits, music theory, and musical excellence learned in 7th grade choir. Being part of 7th grade choir is highly encouraged, but it is not required in order to take this class.
- The boys choir will perform with all of the choirs for one concert each quarter.
- 8th grade girls choir is a year long choir open to all 8th grade girls.
- This will be a continuation of the healthy vocal habits, music theory, and musical excellence learned in 7th grade choir.
- Being part of 7th grade choir is highly encouraged, but is not required in order to take this class. A safe environment will be created to allow our girls to develop beauty in all parts of their vocal range.
- Girls will sing in 2 and 3 part harmony, and perform with all the choirs for one concert each quarter.
- Develop on stage skills through the use of singing, dancing, and acting
- Create opportunities for further growth and development by experiencing audition techniques, set design and construction, costuming, choreography, script writing, vocal technique, characterization, and ensemble/rehearsal techniques

- This class will teach the importance of flexibility, stress relief, health, and physical fitness
- This class with focus on different types of Aerobic and cardiovascular workouts

- Zumba and aerobics involve high levels of a cardiovascular workout, dance and muscle building

- A HANDS ON, project-based course that introduces students to technological systems in the areas of: Energy-power, communication, transportation, manufacturing and construction
- The curriculum is designed around exploration of these systems and their impacts on society. Project Lead the Way and ITEEA’s Engineering by Design are the course standards
- Emphasis is placed on a broad exploration, working in teams and on individual activities to understand concepts, with project and skill development
- Learning activities include: Computer generated 3D Modeling leading to 3D Printing, compressed air dragsters to understand laws of motion, magnetism and propulsion, Understanding principles and forces of bridge design, construction and demolition. MATH
- Develop problem solving skills to decipher the story that numbers can tell.
- Build understanding of Exponential and Linear functions through real life examples.

- Students will cover all the concepts in the Secondary Math I course.

Math Tech is the ‘B-day’ math class. All students have math every day to support math standard and concept mastery.
ENGLISH
- This course is designed to place emphasis on writing, speaking, reading and listening.
- Included in literature are the novel, short stories, poetry, essays, the epic, and drama.
- Writing activities are constructed to increase fluency and generate ideas. Skills taught include sentence structure, vocabulary, spelling, library research, and computer research

- Honors English is an accelerated course designed to provide extensive writing and reading experiences for highly motivated ninth grade students.
- In compliance with DESK, emphasis will be placed on the writing process, various modes of writing, and significant literary genre.

In this one-semester required course, students will acquire additional skills that supplement their English course. Unlike English class, the lab class focuses primarily on reading literature and little focus on writing and grammar. As students read a variety of literature, they will practice the standards of identifying key ideas and details, analyzing craft and structure, and integrating knowledge and ideas as they make connections among a variety of fictional and informational texts.
SCIENCE
- This class gives the insight and understanding of Earth and the processes at work on this planet.
- The curriculum includes labs, designing experiments (Inquiry Labs), guest speakers, and two field trips (Clark Planetarium and Antelope Island) all to help better understand the formation and the processes that shape Earth.
- Students will gain an appreciation and understanding of our place in space, the interconnected systems at work here, and the personal responsibility/impact humans have on Earth’s systems.
- At the successful completion of this class, students will have earned one physical science credit towards the three science credits required for high school graduation. They will also have a knowledge base for a substantial percentage of ACT questions that are Earth Science related.

- The focus of this course will be an in-depth analysis of the current global and regional science issues as they relate to the Earth and sustainability.
- Plan an additional 30 minutes each night of homework and extra study time in April for a comprehensive review for the test in May.

- Students will participate in a variety of individual sports and games.

- All students will also be involved in a program utilizing the fitness center which includes weightlifting and some aerobic activity.
- A class to introduce students to proper techniques of body conditioning and training procedures in starting a personalized program with the benefits of being physically fit; including proper eating/nutrition guidelines, and recovery and prevention of injuries
- Cardio workouts and understanding and maintaining your target heart rate
- This class will teach the importance of flexibility, stress relief, health, and physical fitness
- This class with focus on different types of Aerobic and cardiovascular workouts
- Studies indicate that yoga can help reduce high levels of cholesterol and help prevent heart disease.

- Now you get to participate in full band concerts, elementary band tour and travelling to festivals as well as improve personal skill development with solo and ensemble experiences. Don’t forget, practicing at home is an important part of your Band experience and the key to developing an incredible talent.

Students must have one year of Beginning Percussion Level I
- Students will be combined with 8th and 9th graders to form a Percussion Ensemble.
- This class will continue to teach students the techniques to play concert percussion instruments.
- Learning mallet percussion and snare drum will continue to be the core focus but we will go deeper into learning timpani, Latin and African hand drums, and other battery and auxiliary percussion instruments.
- Students will perform with the Percussion Ensemble at Solo and Ensemble Festivals, the annual Day of Percussion Festival as well as at concerts and playing concert percussion with the Concert Band.
- This is an intense, yet exciting class. Students are expected to be self-motivated, driven, and dedicated.
- Students are required to have their own mallets, drumsticks, and a percussion kit for home practice and in class rehearsal. Class Fee covers maintenance of classroom percussion instruments.
